Firewall protection for a Mac
I'm trying to find out if I need firewall or other protection for my Mac computer

No matter what you may think or what anyone tells you your Mac does not need anything as everything it needs is already built in.
You should also stay clear of any software that claims to protect, clean, defend or speed up your Mac. These claims are bogus and will only slow down your Mac as well as emptying your pockets.
Any network you connect to (Wi-Fi etc) will already be protected by a firewall.
