I have an iPhone X. All though it’s up to date with its Software Update it no longer updates the Apple Watch, Series 8. I have read that I should be able to update my watch via Wi-Fi but it says ‘Unable to check for update An error occurred while checking for a software update’. I have rebooted the watch, turned off Bluetooth so the iPhone doesn’t connect to watch. Can anyone help please.

watchOS 10 requires iOS 17, and your iPhone X will not support iOS 17, so the Apple Watch will not apply the watchOS 10 update.
If you some how manage to get your Apple Watch updated to watchOS 10, it would stop working with your iPhone X and then you would be forced to buy a new iPhone, or give up using the Apple Watch.
So I strongly suggest you stay on watchOS 9 until such a time as you decide to get a newer iPhone.

Thank you so much for replying. I spent over and hour and a half with Apple support the other night. Both phone and Watch were turned inside out and back to front as I turned on/off, deleted/added, checked /unchecked absolutely everything to no avail. Then phoned customer support at John Lewis the next day (that’s where I bought the watch with 2 yr warrantee) they went through nearly all the same checks as Apple and decided I needed to bring the watch in for repair. Very disappointed that neither realised that Watch and iPhone no longer compatible, despite telling them what I had and which iOS/OS they were using, should I have been able to upgrade the Apple Watch via the internet. I shall now be saving up for a new iPhone. Once again thank you.
