iMac and eGPU - what to chose

Hello everyone,

I'm currently using an iMac with a 3.8 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, an AMD Radeon Pro 5500XT 8GB GPU, and 72GB of 2133 MHz DDR4 RAM. After recently acquiring Topaz Video AI, I've found the software virtually unusable on my setup. Rendering even a short 20-second clip takes an excessive amount of time. According to Topaz support, my GPU isn't powerful enough for their AI-driven software. Could anyone advise if an eGPU would be a feasible solution to enhance performance? If so, I'd appreciate recommendations on a compatible eGPU setup that would not only work with my iMac but also effectively address the slow rendering issues with Topaz Video AI. Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

iMac 27″, macOS 14.3

For an eGFX enclosure I'd suggest an Akitio Node Titan, a Razor Core X, or a Sonnet Breakaway Box. If size matters the Sonnet is the smallest/lightest (12.7L volume, 31cm max card length) while the Razor is the largest/heaviest (14.4L volume, 33cm max card length).

An RX 6900XT is the fastest GPU you can use with macOS, but an RX 6800XT is probably a better value. Make sure any GPU you pick will fit the eGFX enclosure you pick. Otherwise as mentioned see the eGPU support article for supported graphics cards: Use an eGPU with your Mac - Apple Support
