You would know because you would need to manually go in and turn it on as outlined here How to back up with iCloud - Apple Support
Assuming that you have another Apple device, such as an iPhone, that is signed-in with the same AppleID - you can verify the backup status of your iPad from settings...
Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] - find the iPad in the list of devices
Tap this item to open the related device properties page - and here you will find its backup status. By example:
In this example you will see that the last backup to iCloud occurred Yesterday at 12:09.
