Need to buy a screen replacement ribbon cable for iMac A1418 EMC 2805
I ruined the connector trying to fit it into the socket after replacing HDD with SSD. Question: which cable should I order.

this one from amazon appears to be the correct one: Replacement LCD LED Video Display Port Cable 923-0281 Compatible for iMac 21.5" A1418 2012 Screen Flex Cable
your best bet wold be to visit OWC’s website and find the HDD replacement video for your particular iMac. then you can skip through the video till you get to the point where you need to disconnect the LVDS cable from the display. that will show you which end goes to the display, and which end goes to the logic board.

you're welcome. :)
I trust that I haven't loused up the on-board socket too
that is possible, but I performed an HDD to SSD swap in my previous iMac. (late 2009 model) I also damaged my LVDS cable. and if memory serves, the cable was extremely fragile, but the socket seemed a bit more robust. just be gentle when installing the new cable, and it should be fine.
OK - I now have a replacement cable after dome difficulty. The first one was lost by Royal Mail. The second one has now arrived but I have a particular query about the orientation of the connector - it really isn't obvious which way up it fits into the on board receptacle!! Can you help? I would love to see a real diagram - really don't want to louse things up.
John
The good news is that with my heart in my mouth, and having blown up one or two videos at the appropriate step, I reconnected the ribbon cable concerned.
Bingo! Success!! So the next step was to reinstall the OS. Here then was my next snag. I formatted the 500GB SSD in the suggested format and reinstalled OSX over the internet. At this point it installed Yosemite10.10.5, which is pretty old. So I am currently looking around to see if I would have had a chance to install a later version - any ideas welcome. The OSX version installed asked for my Apple ID and PW, which it accepted but when I got to the Ts and Cs the OK button was greyed out. The only way I could get in was to create a brand new Apple profile.
Also I wanted to try to retrieve a Time Machine backup which I carefully took before removing the HDD. However when I added Time Machine to the menu bar it didn't seem to find the plugged in disk which I had saved it to, which puzzled me.
Maybe I am just too familiar with PCs!!

the 2012 iMac can run up to and including Catalina. I would recommend upgrading one macOS at a time all the way up to Catalina. especially if you have the time to do so. at the very least, I would upgrade first from Yosemite to High Sierra before going to Catalina. you can find all the required downloads here >> How to download and install macOS - Apple Support.

sometimes you need to scroll to the bottom of the T&Cs before you are able to click on "OK".

sorry, I have never needed to do a TM restore (knock on wood) so I am not well versed in that area. you will need someone else's advice on that.

we can't all be perfect. ;)
