Gamification—votes, points, badges, tokens, rings, banners, and such, and sales spiffs and sales quotas and legions of other manipulative examples—all work, at least until the persuasion fails, or until the measurements near-inevitably become misaligned with the intended goals.

Until the gamification gets gamed.

Limits and changes are usually then implemented.

The internet points system around here was recently massively overhauled, too.
