I have a MacBook Air 13” early 2015 on macOS Monterey. I want to run an external monitor so I have two screens. How do I do this? My Mac has the lighting cable port not a usb c port. Is a docking station required for this? Lmk what cord etc thank you

The Thunderbolt 2 port on that MacBook Air uses a Mini DisplayPort connector, and doubles as a Mini DisplayPort. (The Mac senses what type of device is plugged in, and adjusts the use of the port accordingly.)
Most modern monitors have (Mini) DisplayPort, HDMI, and/or USB-C (DisplayPort) inputs. I have not heard of any adapters to go from Mini DisplayPort output (on a computer) to USB-C (DisplayPort) input (on a monitor). (There are more USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapters than you can shake a stick at, but they go in the other direction.)
So you want a monitor with DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, or HDMI input. (It's OK if a monitor also has USB-C input … just as long as it has at least one input that your current Mac can use.)
DVI and VGA are legacy inputs – so if a monitor only offered them, I'd suggest skipping it, and moving on to something else.

The user manual indicates that it has both HDMI and DisplayPort inputs. Given that, I would think that a simple Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable would be the way to go. Such cables don't involve any signal conversion; just pin for pin connections between two connectors of different physical sizes.
The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter route should work, too, provided that the adapter and cable both support 4K resolution. The monitor has a "HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color" setting. I don't know if how you set it makes a difference.

The external monitor is LG 27UL500-W 27-inch 4K UHD (3840 x 2160). I tried to connect a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter to the monitor with the HDMI cable it came with but it still didn’t work and nothing is showing on my display. Could you suggest/link what I would need? Thank you.
The external monitor can have a resolution of up to 3840x2160 pixels.
