Maya renders going to sleep

I am using Maya 8.5 on an iMac. I have done many overnight batch renders of frames without a problem until now.

After a few hours of normal rendering, the process will apparently go to "sleep" in the middle of a frame. When I wake the computer up hours later, the render picks up again right where it left off. It can waste several valuable hours.

In the preferences, I have changed the energy saving settings to "never" put the computer to sleep, and I have unchecked the "put the hard disk to sleep when possible". I have left the display to sleep as normal, and that kicks in long before the render goes to sleep, so it doesn't seem to have an effect.

Is there some other place to look?
