Why do some banks not like Safari?

First, I use a 2023 MacBook Pro that runs on macOS 14.2.1. My Safari browser is Version 17.2.1 (19617.1.17.11.12).

I have two money accounts—one with a credit union, the other with a small community bank near my home. I can't view or print statements for the credit card issued by the **. The community bank's site used to work with Safari, but this week it won't launch at all. I've called or messaged both the ** and the bank, and the response from both was, "Install the Google Chrome browser."

I really didn't want to install what I consider a "foreign" browser, but I did anyway. No surprise: the problems disappeared. I should add that all my other credit card sites work just fine with Safari.

Sidebar: I'm a military retiree, and on occasion I need to access certain government web sites. The U.S. Government doesn't seem to like Safari either. Right up front, the web sites I use tell me I'm using an unsupported browser—that I should go away and use Edge, Chrome, or something else ... anything but Safari.

So—what is it about Safari that some banking and government sites don't like? Where does the problem lie—do the banks need to tweak their sites? Does Apple need to fix the problem? Am I the problem? That is, do I need to adjust some setting in Safari?

I'll add that a few times someone has suggested that I clear my cache. I've done that, and it hasn't helped. The one thing that has helped is to install the Google Chrome browser. That seems so unnecessary, but it works. I'll appreciate your thoughts and advice.

Before going anything

Suggest updating to current Sonoma 14.3.1

Keep your Mac up to date

Get the latest software updates from Apple

Always Make a Time Machine Backup  before doing any upDates

Test using current version of Safari in 14.3.1

Still issues proceed with below

To be honest, some Bank Website Developers cater to what they want you to use and do not include macOS and Safari as a Real Need to develop for if you catch the drift lol

If you have the Time and Patience

Safari >> Setting >> Advanced and at the Bottom of the page Enable " Show features for web developers "

This will add a Option in the Top Menu called Develop

Inside there and in third image change the Agent the Bank Site will see

There’s nothing about Safari that would preclude banks from supporting it. It boils down to the willingness of their IT departments to allow it.

In my case I do online business with multiple banks, investment services, credit card companies, online merchants, etc., and ALL work perfectly with the current version of Safari (17.3.1). I haven’t had a problem with Safari being rejected for years now. As for the U.S. government I use the Social Security website, the IRS website, the Passport website without issues. Safari complies with ALL current internet standards and there is no reason whatsoever to reject it. So when someone like you comes with such an issue I don’t understand

So either the financial institutions you do business with are lazy and/or incompetent OR you have some sort of issue on your machine.

Chrome has, by far, the largest market share of internet browsers. Around 66% the last time I looked. It's easier (and lazier) to make and test a website to work with one browser and Chrome is the obvious one to choose for that.

I normally use Safari but I always have Chrome installed for situations like yours (and to use to see if it is the browser that is the problem or something else) when I encounter an issue.

Much like Both previous Contributors

Using 4 different Banks, 2 Credit Card Companies the company Pension Plan Website where I retired from, Canada Pension Plan Site, Canada Revenue Agency site using Safari on Sonoma 14.3.1 - no issues

Just the CRA site needed a little tweaking

Safari >> Setting >> Websites >> Pop Up Windows > then Allow

For the rare situation where some sites does not work.

I keep Firefox at the ready

Personal Choice over Google Chrome

If push came to shove - www.brave.com without the baggage of Google

Thanks, PRP_53! A bonus from this exchange was your tip to update macOS to 14.3.1. I'm normally very fussy about keeping my machine up-to-date, but I'd fallen behind.

Well, I've followed your advice, and now I can get my statements from my credit union! And my local bank site behaves, too. Huzzah! It appears the trouble was not so much with the people who built those web sites as it was my settings. Thanks a heap!
