Mail opens and then shuts down within a few seconds
when I open mail, it only stay's open for a few seconds and then crashes

First thing to try is restarting the computer, while you are at it, restart in Safe Mode with a USB keyboard. If you are using the original wireless keyboard, simply plug in the charging cable it came with to make it a USB keyboard. After you have restarted in Safe Mode, restart normally and test.
