What are the recommendations for running the battery down regularly?

Mac14,10 (M2 Pro)

What are the recommendations for running the battery down regularly like older MacBooks?

This MacBook macOS13 seems to have good battery management.

I leave mine running 24/7, lid closed with external monitor and external boot drive.

I've never actually used the built in display yet except for the initial setup last month.

The MacBook is my main home system that I take when traveling. Just haven't gone anywhere since I bought this last month. (refurbished from Apple)

Do I still need to run the battery down regularly?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 13.6

DO NOT.

Yes, you should allow the battery to discharge, but DO NOT take it to zero, as that is the fastest way to destroy a Li-Ion battery.

Discharge it to 40-50-60-70% range and life happens, such that you take it lower from time to time, but as long as you do not make a habit of deep draining the battery it will be fine.

The other thing you do not want to do, is keep the battery at 100% forever. Apple has software that if it detects that the battery is on the charger all the time, it will stop charging at 80% (unless you disable this feature).

If you regularly charge your Mac at night, and then take it off the charger in the morning, the software will charge to 80% until about an hour before you typically disconnect the Mac, and then take the Mac to 100% (again, unless you disable this feature).

If you are regularly taking it off the charger and just using it, that is sufficient. You do not have to do any detailed battery management otherwise.

Computer years are like dog years though.

Actually most dogs have a longer life span than your typical computer. OK, I do have a 2007 Mac mini that is still running, so it is along the lines of an old dog. But generally most computers are only actively used 7-8 years, and then the operating system upgrades stop arriving.
