Powering Magsafe With a 5 Watt Charger

I just purchased the iPhone 15 Pro Max to replace my XS. I prefer slow charging and am using my old 5 watt charger with a USB to USB-C cable which works well. The 5 watt charger charges about 20% an hour which is fine with me. I want to maximize battery life. With the 80% limit, I plan to often just charge it overnight.

My question is: I would like to buy the Magsafe but only if it will work with a 5 watt or other low power charger. Has anyone tried this? Thanks

iPhone XS, iOS 17

I hand't tried it as I had to go digging for an old fashioned 5w charger, then find a USB A to USB C cable, but I just did and was surprised to see it did start charging on a MagSafe charger. Why are you concerned about charing at a much slower rate? iPhone can't be overcharged. And using a MagSafe charger with a 20w charging brick works really well, especially with Optimized Battery Charging turned on. It won't hurt or degrade the life of the battery at all.

I fast charged my iPhone 14 Pro Max on a MagSafe Charger with a 20w charging block, with optimized battery charging turned on every night for a full year. And when I traded it a full year later for my 15 Pro Max, my Battery Health was still 100%. Don't believe everything you read out there. Charging at 5w isn't going to make your battery last longer. But you do what you think is best.

Thank you very much for trying it out! We plan to charge our new phones overnight with the max set 80%. Just set and forget. For us, doing a rapid charge is completely unnecessary although we would certainly use the MagSafe with our 20 watt charger if a fast charge is needed. I still see many credible articles that admit that fast charging could result in more battery heat, and, over time, degrade the battery slightly more that slow charging. The battery capacity of the 5-year-old battery in the iPhone XS that I just replaced is at 88% which was the result of slow charging. Once I get the MagSafe I will report on the rate of charging per hour. Thanks again.
