I am also having problems with the microphones on my airpods (3rd gen). I took them to the apple store and they updated the software but the problem is still there. I just realized that if I am in a complete silence environment microphone will not work, but If I have some “kind of loud” background sound it works. So when the apple genius tested inside the mall it worked well, but inside my car or at home it doesn’t. It just started happening after Apple released the last firmware update 6A321, towards the end of January
