When i recently got a new phone. thinking i would be keeping both numbers, i created a new apple id. that doesn't function like i 'd hoped, so how can i combine my 2 apple ids into one so eveything is in one place?

You cannot combine or otherwise merge Apple IDs.
You will need to choose one Apple ID to use, and make sure it is logged into the iPhone in all pertinent locations.
Settings ➜ Apple ID
Settings ➜ Apple ID ➜ Media & Purchases.
Settings ➜ Facetime
Settings ➜ Messages
