Audio comes from my built-in speakers in my macbook pro even though it says my earphones are connected

Everytime I open an app with my earphones connected to my macbook, the sound comes from the build-in speakers even though it says that my earphones are connected. I have to manually reset my output device everytime this happens. How do I fix this?
