Logic Pro: Sound Library menu options not selectable, cannot transfer to external drive

I transferred my Logic library onto a new hard drive, but Logic does not recognise it. I cannot relocate the sound library onto this drive again because all the Sound Library options in the menu are greyed out except for "Reinstall sound library". Based on multiple other threads regarding this problem, I have tried:

  • symlinking /Library/Application Support/Logic to the external library
  • deleting the Essential library and letting Logic reinstall it
  • clicking the "Reinstall sound library" option
  • temporarily removing the library from the external drive
  • reconnecting the old drive that previously housed the library and symlinking it
  • deleting Logic Pro setting files
  • disconnecting all external drives
  • reinstalling Logic Pro

So far, nothing has worked. Attempting to symlink to the new directory using sudo ln -s causes Logic to ask where the old drive is, apparently since it still expects the library there (the drives have different names). No matter what happens, the Sound Library options are all greyed out. What to do?

Error message upon starting the application. The new drive has a different name than Logic is looking for.

Sound Library menu.

Did you use Logic to move your sound library to the external drive? or did you manually drag it from the computer's drive to the other drive. If you did it the second way, that is the problem. You have to move the library through Logic itself using the Relocate Sound Library.

See if you can move the Sound files back to the proper locations on the computer. Some go in the Audio Folder and some in Application Support/Logic. Otherwise you'll need to redownload all the audio again. And once done use the RELOCATE SOUND LIBRARY feature to move to the external drive.

When I transferred the library onto the old external drive, I used Logic's transfer option. Eventually the drive became old and unstable, and I had to get a replacement. I copied all the contents of the old drive over to the new drive in one swift operation. I didn't think twice about this until Logic started asking about the library on the old drive instead of the new one.

I cannot move the sound files back onto the computer because the library is far too big for my internal drive. I'd be happy to redownload all the audio again, but Logic won't let me (see above image).

Ideally, what I'd want is for Logic to forget it ever relocated the sound library, so that I can install it fresh and then relocate it.

Unfortunately, this did not work — Logic still asks for the old drive, with the same error message (even though the drive now has the same name as the old one).

Interesting note: I have an older version of Logic Pro (10.3.3) lying on a separate hard drive, and when I opened this version I was able to install the sound library as normal. Granted, it's an older version so it doesn't support moving the library to another drive, but at least the sound library works as intended here.
