Can a magic mouse wear out?

I'm using a magic mouse with a 2020 iMac. The mouse is a bit older (it was originally mated to a previous iMac) and intermittently it will not respond to left clicks or else it will fail to remember where the cursor is until I move it around and reacquaint it with the active window. This has the feel of a hardware issue but before I invest in a new mouse I just thought I'd ask--any chance that this behavior is a system or software issue?

I'm assuming that your "bit older" Magic Mouse, is the 1st generation (A1296) model that uses 2 AA batteries. In contrast, the 2nd generation model only has a rechargeable battery.

Regardless, the 1st gen model came out in 2009, so it is very possible that it is starting to fail. It also simply can be nothing more than some form of debris lodged in the optical lens port on the bottom of the mouse.

I suggest two things to try:

  1. Carefully examine this port to see if nothing is "hiding" there, and
  2. Reset the mouse: https://www.technewstoday.com/how-to-reset-magic-mouse/
