I already have an Airport Express wired to my router, but I am trying to add a new AirPort Express to my network. The original AirPort Express is on the main floor of my house and the new one will be in the basement.
Does the new AirPort Express have to be connected via cables to work or can it be connected wirelessly? The main use of the new one is to turn my analog stereo into an AirPlay channel.
If your goal is to only use this send AirPort Express base station for AirPlay, and not to extend the existing wireless network, you only need to connect this Express as a wireless client to the existing wireless network.

Simply connect the appropriate cable (Ethernet cable between the device and the AirPort Express, USB cable from a compatible USB printer, or audio cable for music streaming), and configure the AirPort Express for client mode using AirPort Utility.
Doesn’t that mean the new AirPort Express needs to be connected via Ethernet to the original AirPort?
No, that is referencing connecting a non wireless device to the Express by Ethernet. The Express, in Client Mode, would connect to the existing wireless network wirelessly. In Client Mode, the Express is acting as a wireless Ethernet bridge for wired devices ... but, if you read the article carefully, it can also be used for AirPlay.
Got it to work. It’s an older gen model so it was just being finicky and taking awhile to show up in the WiFi menu so I thought maybe it needed to be wired.
