You're not charge to update apps or download free apps. What issue do you have putting in your card info?
Apple requires a payment method be added to an Apple ID to make use of the store services including downloading free apps and updating them.
Having a payment method does not mean you are going to be charged for anything. Unless you have pending charge on your account and that is why its asking for a payment method.
Once your payment method is correctly verified and you have no pending payments or active subscriptions, it can be removed, and will not be required again unless some other billing issue arises.
