is there any reason (other than my heart) that the watch gives me lots of low HR notifications

I have the low HR notifications on (<40bpm for 10mins). I will get a lot of these notifications during sleep and occasionally during waking hours. I booked an appointment with a cardiologist, but I am looking for a reason with the watch, or the way I wear it or my skin perhaps that is causing this other than my HR being low.

Would too loose be a reason ? I wear it pretty snug.

While wearing your Apple Watch too loosely could potentially contribute to inaccurate heart rate readings, wearing it snugly should generally provide more accurate readings. However, there could be several reasons why you're receiving lots of low heart rate notifications, even if your heart rate isn't actually low:

  1. Skin Contact: Ensure that the sensors on the back of your Apple Watch are making good contact with your skin. If there's interference due to sweat, lotion, or dirt, it may affect the accuracy of the heart rate readings.
  2. Skin Tone: Some individuals with darker skin tones may experience less accurate heart rate readings due to the way light is absorbed and reflected by the skin. Apple has acknowledged this issue and has been working to improve accuracy for all users.
  3. Positioning: Make sure your Apple Watch is positioned correctly on your wrist. The sensors should be on the underside of your wrist and in contact with the skin. If the watch is too high or too low on your wrist, it may affect the accuracy of the readings.
  4. Tightness of Band: Wearing the band too tightly could potentially restrict blood flow and affect the accuracy of heart rate readings. However, wearing it snugly should generally provide more accurate readings.
  5. Interference: Certain activities or movements can interfere with heart rate readings, especially if they cause the watch to move around on your wrist. Activities like weightlifting or vigorous arm movements may lead to inaccurate readings.
  6. Watch Position During Sleep: If you wear your Apple Watch while sleeping, ensure that it remains in contact with your skin throughout the night. Movements during sleep could potentially affect the accuracy of readings.
  7. Individual Variation: It's also possible that your heart rate naturally dips below 40 bpm during sleep or periods of relaxation. However, if you're consistently receiving low heart rate notifications during waking hours, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying medical issues.

If you're concerned about the accuracy of your Apple Watch's heart rate readings or are receiving frequent low heart rate notifications, it's a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance. They can help determine whether there may be any underlying medical concerns and provide personalized advice based on your individual health status.
