Unable to connect MacBook Air with a Dell monitor.

Hello,

I just bought my MacBook Air M2 and I am trying to connect it to my old monitor Dell U2312HM.

I also bought the USB-C Multiport Pro from the Apple Store.

When I connect the monitor and MacBook Air using HDMI, the MacBook connects to it, but shows black screen on the monitor.

How can I fix this?

If you're encountering a black screen on your Dell U2312HM monitor when connecting it to your MacBook Air M2 using an HDMI cable and the Apple USB-C Multiport Pro adapter, there are a few potential solutions you can try:

  1. Check Cable and Adapter Connection: Ensure that the HDMI cable is securely connected to both the monitor and the USB-C Multiport Pro adapter. Also, make sure that the USB-C Multiport Pro adapter is firmly plugged into your MacBook Air M2.
  2. Try a Different HDMI Cable: The HDMI cable you're using may be faulty or incompatible. Try using a different HDMI cable to see if that resolves the issue.
  3. Check Monitor Input Source: On your Dell U2312HM monitor, make sure that the input source is set to HDMI. You can usually change the input source using the monitor's physical buttons or menu.
  4. Reset Display Preferences: Sometimes, resetting the display preferences on your MacBook Air M2 can help resolve compatibility issues. To do this, go to System Preferences > Displays, then hold down the Option key and click on the "Scaled" option. Select "Default for display" from the list.
  5. Update macOS and Drivers: Ensure that your MacBook Air M2 is running the latest version of macOS and that all system updates are installed. Additionally, check for any firmware updates for your Dell U2312HM monitor that may improve compatibility with macOS.
  6. Check for Adapter Compatibility: Although the Apple USB-C Multiport Pro adapter should be compatible with your MacBook Air M2, there's always a chance of compatibility issues. Try using a different USB-C adapter or dongle to connect your MacBook Air M2 to the monitor.
  7. Test with Another Monitor: If possible, try connecting your MacBook Air M2 to another monitor or TV using the same HDMI cable and USB-C adapter. This can help determine whether the issue lies with the monitor or the MacBook Air M2.
  8. Contact Apple Support: If none of the above solutions work, it may be worth contacting Apple Support for further assistance. They can provide additional troubleshooting steps or advise you on any potential hardware issues.

I hope this will help you...

This Dell monitor model has three video inputs: DisplayPort, DVI, & VGA. The best expected performance will be with the DisplayPort. The maximum resolution will be limited to 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz.

This monitor does not have HDMI capability.

Is this the USB-C Multiport Pro adapter that you are referring to:

If it is, then this won't work. Again, because the Dell does not have HDMI support. Instead, you would need something like the following: https://www.anker.com/products/a8315?variant=39300164026518&collections_usb-c-to-displayport=undefined&Sort_by=Recommended

... and a DisplayPort cable to connect to this monitor.

From the photo, you have it connected to the Dell's DVI port, not the VGA port. So, if you actually have a HDMI-to-VGA adapter, it shouldn't fit at all. Also, the Dell's DVI port is a DVI-D Single Link type port which, in theory, is suitable for HDMI-to-DVI adapters. Regardless, I still think it will be better to just use a simple USB-C to DisplayPort cable instead of multiple adapters . The latter is, most likely, why you are unable to get the proper video to the display, even though you can get it physically connected.

According to the Dell U2312HM User Guide, you have a 1920x1080 pixel monitor with a DisplayPort input, a DVI input, a VGA input, a USB upstream port, and USB downstream ports.

I see no mention of HDMI. Are you certain that you have identified the monitor correctly? Or are you using some second adapter (HDMI to DisplayPort, HDMI to DVI) that you aren't telling us about?

I connected the VGA to HDMI adaptor and then connected HDMI cable to the multiport port (the picture you attached)

I'd suggest getting a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter or adapter cable. There's the one that Tesserax mentions, which goes from a USB-C plug to a DisplayPort socket – to which you'd add a DisplayPort cable. If you look on Amazon, you can also find many USB-C to DisplayPort cables that have the adapter built in.

I suppose USB-C (DisplayPort) to HDMI to VGA might work - if you were lucky – but it seems like a roundabout way of connecting a monitor when USB-C (DisplayPort) to DisplayPort is available.

Are you sure that's a HDMI to VGA adapter?

It looks a bit small for that - most of those have a separate box hanging off the cable. The inline "style" is more what I would expect of a HDMI to DVI adapter. Also, if I'm reading the Dell user guide and your photo correctly, that adapter is plugged into your monitor's DVI port. I believe that open blue port is the VGA one.
