Strange AirTag Notification

I’m staying in an Airbnb with someone, and they get a message on their phone that an AirTag followed us from the restaurant we were just at, to the place we were staying. It’s about a 5 min drive, but we ended up finding the AirTag located inside the Airbnb in a spot where no one would see it. While I feel better knowing someone didn’t try and follow me or whatever, it’s a very alarming bug, considering we’ve been living with this AirTag for over 2 weeks without ever seeing it. I’ve seen question about phantom tags, but nothing like this. What kind of bug is this?

Yep, that one is very odd. In theory, the tag would be traveling with you. Like, if someone placed the tag in your car. Find My would then show you the path since it would be your iPhone that is sending its GPS location (along with the tag's ID) to the Apple servers.

What makes this especially odd is it appears to 180º around. That is, the tag is not moving, only you are. Sorry, I really don't have a good explanation for you.

As such, you may want to get with Apple Support to see if they can clear this up. If you do, please post back what they told you. I, and I'm sure others, would want to know. To contact Apple Support directly, just use the "Support" link on the lower left-hand side of this forum's web page.

Just curious ... when you saw this notification, and then, used the Find My app to locate the AirTag, did it show you a map with a dotted line from restaurant to your Airbnb location? ... or did you just get the notification?

It showed a map, sorta in a straight line. We didn’t take the same way home, and I think it was tracking from the house to the restaurant, but both routes home are right next to each other, so I can’t be sure. I didn’t pay enough attention.

The AirTag notification didn’t occur until we were within the AirTags rang at home, so i assumed it thought the AirTag was following us from the house. I don’t understand how we went this long without a notification it was present, and the notification we finally did receive was weird.
