Look for the best PDF to Word converter on Mac M1

Hi all,

I'm looking a good PDF to Word converter that is compatible with my Apple Silicon Mac running macOS Sonoma 14.3. My main goal is to find a tool that can handle the conversion smoothly, preserving the layout, formatting, and ideally, the images within the documents as well. I've come across a few options online, but it's tough to gauge their efficiency and reliability based on just the descriptions and reviews.

I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone here could share their experiences with PDF to Word converters they've used on a M1 Mac. Free options would be fantastic, but I'm also willing to consider paid software if it offers superior performance and accuracy.

Additionally, if there are any tips or tricks for optimizing the conversion process or managing the converted documents, I'd love to hear those as well.

Thanks in advance

PDFs are final stage layout documents, not word processing documents, and their conversion to other formats is problematic without the right tools. Like trying to convert a Subaru to an Audi.

You can open PDFs in Microsoft Word 16.31 or newer and it will do the best it can to convert the PDF to a Word .docx document. This is not perfect but reasonably close. Expect some minor edits.

Probably the best tool is Adobe Acrobat Pro which because Adobe knows the internal PDF structure best, and can output reasonably faithful Word .docx documents from that PDF content.

The less expensive (than Adobe) PDF editors that do provide PDF to Word output have this feature disabled in their trial versions.

Finding a good PDF to Word converter that's both efficient and maintains the integrity of your original document can indeed be a challenge, especially on the newer Apple Macs. Here are a few suggestions and points to consider based on common experiences and what's generally recommended in the tech community:

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro DC:
  • Smallpdf:

Preview: Before looking for third-party options, don't forget about the built-in Preview app on your Mac. While it doesn't convert PDF to Word directly, you can use it to copy and paste text from a PDF into a Word document. This method might require a bit more manual adjustment, especially for complex documents, but it's a free and quick solution for simpler files.

My version of Word (16.82) in Office 2021 for Mac has never popped a dialog mentioning any online conversion service. There is just a dialog during the generation of the .docx. That 40 MB PDF is not a small document and Microsoft may inherently restrict the size of their conversion. Word cannot convert PDFs that were scanned (and not OCRd) either.

Adobe does have a monthly/annual subscription service as a back door to their otherwise free Acrobat Reader application that avoids the high monthly cost of Adobe Acrobat Pro (PDF Editor) but does give you the ability to convert PDF into Word .docx. On the Acrobat Reader File menu, there is a Convert to Word, Excel, or Powerpoint menu item that will take you to the Adobe site for more information. If this is a one-off, that would not be practical, and the size of your PDF may also be problematic.

When I am trying to open a PDF document with MS Word app on my Mac, it asks me to allow online file conversion to open the PDF file. Word needs to convert the file using a Microsoft online service.

When I click the Allow button, a message pops up and says this version of Word can't open this file because it is too large. Generally, a file of this type is larger than 40MB is too big to open.

This is ridiculous!
