How to fix the Notion icon bug on macOS?

I have recently come across this bug where the icon for the notion app has changed to something else and I cannot change it back. I do not even know what the new icon is or where it comes from, and it only shows up on some specific views, not all of them. I have tried:

  1. Removing the app with app cleaner.
  2. Searching through finder for other notion related visible or hidden files and removing them all.
  3. Un-installing and re-installing.
  4. Changing the icon manually in the info (cmd + I) window.
  5. Changing the icon manually in the package contents.

Specs: MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro 2021 - MacOS Sonoma 14.2.1 - Notion 3.2.1

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated.

I was afraid that might happen. In Monterey you could still run sudo commands on a lot of the system. Not so in Ventura or Sonoma. I also had a feeling the first command would fail. I looked to see if the file it was going to delete was in that location. It is, but it's also marked off-limits with a red "no permission" circle.

And I should have thought of this, first. I usually make suggestions in order from easiest to obnoxious. So, a really easy one to try is to find out if the flaw is somehow related to your normal account. Go into settings and create a new user account. Login to that. If that fixes the display, then something specifically in your account is causing the problem. If it doesn't, then the issue is system wide.

I had the same issue with Notion icon. The reason behind this bug is broken icons of certain sizes inside electron.icns file, you can find it inside Notion.app /Notion.app/Contents/Resources.

I guess your monitor is not retina, so that's why you see icons that matches to regular resolution and them broken by chance.

It is not obvious on first look, but here is solution worked for me.

Take electron.icns and extract icons by command: iconutil -c iconset electron.icns, you will get folder electron.iconset which contains all icons. Some of icons will look same as on your screenshots.

Replace broken icons: use good ones, resize and then replace.

Repack fixed set of icons by command: iconutil -c icns electron.iconset.

Use fixed electron.icns and set icon for Notion.app.

Here is doc for how to use iconutil

Hey Kurt, thank you for your reply. I have installed Notion myself on my Mac and have been using it for years. The icon for the app just recently changed to this little blue and green square in Spotlight and some Finder views. I have no idea why it is happening, where the the new icon is coming from or what it even is. Let me know if you have any ideas on how to fix this. 😊

I found it mentioned here. Per their suggestion, a safety backup should be made before running the two commands shown. Which lastly is followed by starting in Safe Mode to clear some final cache items.

It's from 2022, so the commands should still be relevant in Sonoma.

Another possibility would be to reinstall the OS, which should replace these some items the commands remove with fresh copies.

Hey Kurt, I just got done trying their solutions but it did not work. Booting into safe mode did not fix the icon and when I try to run the command it says I do not have permission to, even though I am the administrator and I am using the sudo flag.

Let me know if you have any other ideas, and thank you for helping me out.

Hey Kurt! The issue has magically resolved itself somehow. I have no idea when it fixed itself or why it even happened. Thank you for trying to help either way, I really appreciate it.

P.S. - I tried the User Account solution you mentioned beforehand and it did not help. Just in case someone has the same problem and they read through this thread
