I've tried creating a new command for space bar without success. The symbol associated with Start/Stop is a horizontal line with an inverted V below it, What's that?

It looks almost identical - but there is a tiny but crucial difference. The square pancake symbol indicates that you have made several "space bar" assignments.
Select the Play or Stop row and look at the bottom of the window. There might be a text displayed like "xxx ... has a higher priority"

The default key commands come with the installation of Logic. You can access them here:
Logic Pro > Key Commands > Presets > ...

If that doesn't help, you might have issues with interfering Control Surface assignments.
Logic pro > Control Surfaces > ...
Check your assignments. You can reset them as well.
To verify macOS isn't interfering, go to System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts. Click the Restore Defaults button.
Your reply: Logic Pro>Key Commands>Presets> Has done it! I've looked at this many times with no results, but I deleted my corrupted Key Commands, restarted and made a new one. yoyoBen, thanks for all your help and persistence.
Can you post a screen shot of the key commands window with the start/stop row?
Not the character, but thanks for the reply. I did try to assign Play/Stop to the space bar without luck. I just can't figure it out. Logic worked fine for me for almost 30 years, I haven't used it for a month and in that month I upgraded to OS 13.6.4 and Logic Pro 10.8.1. Maybe that's the problem...

Do you mean "¥" ? This is a special character, maybe a currency...
Try to assign the "space" bar:

Unfortunately the next time I opened the tune the key commands reverted to the corrupted ones. 😫
