I have looked all over the SETTINGS details and find nothing other than some ability to change the LOOK of the pointer. It appears that the pointer changed overnight to a round transparent dot from the arrow. How can it be returned to original arrow? Is this from some iOS update and beyond my control now?

The on-screen cursor is - as you have observed - a large dot. This dot is customisable for size and colour, however its style cannot be changed to an arrow-pointer.
