Should Apple AirTags be stored without batteries?

If it were me, I would remove the batteries, for a number of reasons:

  • Although rare, lithium-ion batteries could leak.
  • Regardless of where the battery is located, if you plan on storing them for an extended period of time (say months), they will still lose their capacity.
  • With the battery installed, the AirTag will continue to transmit a Bluetooth signal every 3-5 mins. further draining the battery.
  • If the phone you paired it with is outside of its Bluetooth range, the tag can randomly start beeping.
