Up to you- the battery normally lasts about a year. Personally I would keep the battery in though, the cost of a new one is negligible considering you may well need at the AirTag to be powered and functional to find it again if misplaced.
Typically when you are just changing the battery, you shouldn't have to set it up again. Basically, leaving the battery out for awhile, and then, putting it back it shouldn't be any different.
I recently had to replace a depleted battery with a fresh one, and didn't need to set up my tag afterwards.
We keep our Airtags with our luggage locks, so there is little chance of them being misplaced. However, you make a good point that the cost of a new one is negligible. We usually have extra batteries on hand, as the size of the Airtag battery is the same as required by other things we own.
Thank you, Tesserax. You have convince me that keeping the batteries in the Airtags would almost ensure that the Airtags would have no power the next time we would want to use them. Do you know if we would have to set up the Airtags again, once they are stored without batteries?
