Hard Drive FAILING ?

SMART Utility gives a 'FAILING' while checking the hard drive.
(Apple Disk Utility passes - everything from permissions to control drive seems ok)

This is the report:

How serious should I take this (as the iMac is only one year, and changing a drive is a hassle)

very !

be sure you have a solid backup routine in place (time machine backups, bootable clone(s) of your startup disk).

(as the iMac is only one year, and changing a drive is a hassle)

so, are you still inside the warranty period (check your invoice for date of purchase). do you have AppleCare ?

as an extra +layer of defence+, run _*Apple Hardware Test*_ from the install DVD that came with your machine.

if your budget allows it, consider getting [_*TechTool Pro* |http://www.micromat.com/index.php?option=comcontent&task=view&id=202&Itemid=107] or DiskWarrior.

in any case, make sure you're always well backed up. every drive will fail eventually ...
