Data migration mess (M1 iMac on Sonoma)

I'm migrating from a 2008 MacBook Pro to a new iMac. I didn't realize how much data was stored on the old computer, and since the iMac doesn't have an ethernet port, I made the mistake of relying on wifi. I know, I should have found a way around the ethernet problem, but being naïve and in a rush, I didn't. So it's been almost a day and there's still more data to go. Haste does make waste.

I now have a USB-C to ethernet adapter, but as I understand things (which I may not) to use it I would have to stop the migration, restart the computers, and begin over again. Is that true? Would the data already migrated remain on the iMac? To add to this little drama, the iMac has reverted to the page where it's checking the status of the MacBook and it's been stuck there for a while.

I'm afraid I'm a slow learner when it comes to these things, and I don't want to mess things up further. So thanks in advance for whatever advice you may have.

The fastest , easiest and most reliable method is to connect the old Macs Time Machine External Hard Disk to the new Mac. Then launch Migration Assistant on the new Mac and within a couple hours or so you are done!!! If your old Mac does not have a Time Machine backup then create one!!! Its really that simple.

The old Mac library likely has third party 32 bit apps on it, the new Mac will not run 32 bit apps. Your best option is to inventory the 32 bit apps to determine what you want and what you don’t and for the apps you want upgrade them to 64 bit apps.

Yes.

Would the data already migrated remain on the iMac?

Yes, but would be doubled to a new user, so, you'd really want to erase things & really start over.

Or, have a late Lunch, supper, late dinner, a midnight snack, & a good night's rest. In the morning check if you need to take an extended Breakfast/Bruch call! ;)
