How do I update and log into an iPad from 2012?

I recently found my wife's old iPad that she bought in 2012 and stopped using in about 2016. I'm not looking to do much with it, pretty much only use it for Apple Books. I've finally charged it back up to full, got it on and it works still, but I've been attempting to update it for the past 3 hours and nothing is happening.


Is it possible to still even use this iPad with Apple Books? Can it even update? Is there a way to manually do it maybe?


And I did attempt to log in with my Apple Account but it came back saying it couldn't use the Login Token or something. It accepted my email and password, sent a notification to my iPhone, put in the secruity code that it gave me and then gave me the login token issue.

Older models of iPad may be restricted in their ability to be updated. In such circumstances, if Apps that you wish to use require a more recent version of iOS/iPadOS than the iPad is capable of update, the only option is to replace the iPad with a much newer or current model.


Whether or not you are able to update any iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by the iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Settings > General > About

Here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:


32-bit devices (obsolete)

iPad Air2, iPad mini4 - iPadOS 15.8.1

iPad5, iPad Pro (9.7"/12.9" first generation) - iPadOS 16.7.5

Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version - iPadOS 17.3.1

Be aware that while an iPad may be capable of update, in some circumstances you may need to use a computer to perform the update*. You should note that for your iPad to install an available update, its battery must be charged to at least 50% capacity - and/or be connected to its Power Adapter. Similarly, the iPad can only be updated over a standard WiFi connection - or be updated by a PC or Mac using iTunes or Finder - over a USB connection.
