NAS recommendation to use with Time Machine

I’ve been backing up my MBP with Time Machine using an external hard drive, but I’d like to do this wirelessly now.

I’ve read a ton of threads on here as well as recommendations on external sites and am sort of at a loss as to what device would make the best NAS for Time Machine. I know it’s got to support backup over SMB, but I keep reading conflicting advice like:

* Western Digital MyCloud devices show up on every “what NAS should I use for TimeMachine backups” article on various Apple-focused websites, but I’ve read a ton of posts on here saying they suck for Time Machine use.

* lots of people on here recommend using Synology, but I’m looking to spend $300 or less if possible and they seem to be geared more toward rack storage and are super expensive. Or you have to supply your own hard drives.

* I’ve found just as many posts encouraging the use of old Time Capsules as a Time Machine NAS as I have posts saying don’t do that, they’re super unreliable. I have two old ones sitting around (one was the last or second to last iteration ever made, I believe) and this would be the cheapest option, but if the consensus has changed and they are likely to fail now I don’t want to use that.

Is there a consumer-level solution for this that isn’t WD?

One more solution 'hidden in plain sight' is using any Mac on your network as a "Shared Time machine destination." Requires a Mac running 10.13 High Sierra or later to enable that specific Sharing use.

Anything can fail at any time. None of my Time Capsules have ever failed, and I have many of them from the first iteration to the last.

When they fail, as everything does eventually, they can be repaired. Repairs are not "authorized" but replacing the hard disk drive is a straightforward exercise. When the opportunity arises I intend to replace them with larger capacity drives since the largest TCs only had 3 TB hard disks — not very large by today's standards.

"Super unreliable" is not how I would characterize the Time Capsules. Most of the time, backup failures are caused by doing things with Time Machine that it was never designed to do. If you use TM according to its instructions it works with 100% reliability. I have never experienced a single failure to back up or restore, ever since Time Machine was introduced in OS X "Leopard".

Years ago I tried and failed to make a Synology NAS work reliably with Time Machine. Plenty other people have tried and failed also. Yet there are some people for whom they seem to work just fine.

Lots of misinformation out there.
