iPhone: Why have to restore from iCloud after every update?

When an update is pushed to my iPhone, I am unable to simply install. I must plug into my MacBook Pro for the update to initiate. Upon initiation, my iPhone reverts back to factory settings and I must completely restore from my last iCloud backup. Questions

  1. Shouldn't I be able to simply update my iPhone without having to plug into an actual laptop?
  2. Is this issue due to a virus? If so, does updating from iCloud just perpetuate the virus?

Thank you for any expertise you can share.

Regarding question 1, normally yes, you should simply be able to update your iPhone. But I strongly suspect there’s some pertinent information about your scenario you have not told us. A few possibilities:

  • Your iPhone is managed by an employer, education institution, etc.
  • Your iPhone is restricted (Settings > Screen Time)
  • Your iPhone has been jailbroken
  • Your iPhone has used beta software

Regarding question 2, a virus is extremely unlikely.

Appreciate the quick reply. I've reviewed the possibilities you cite and none are pertain to my situation. I am not sure what it means to have used "beta" software. If it did, it was not deliberate.

Any remedies that can be suggested so I don't have to do this dance with every update? It's gotten old having to spend a couple hours fixing my settings every time a simple patch/update is released.
