SD card adapter not recognized by iPhone

I recently got a 3rd party SD adapter so I could get photos from my digital camera straight over to my phone, i'm currently on iphone XR. It worked great the first few times! I was able to access all of it through files with no issues. Unfortunately after a few uses, my phone has refused to even recognize the device. it doesn't show up in my files anymore. the SD card isn't the issue and the card reader is very new so i would assume it's not the issue either. I'm really not sure what to do. I've done all of the troubleshooting aside from a reset (which I'd rather not do since I don't want to lose all of my settings.) please help :(

Connect a USB drive or an SD card reader. Attach the USB drive or SD card reader to the charging port on your iPhone using a compatible connector or adapter.
