External Monitor flickering issue on M3 MacBook Pro

I recently bought an M3 MacBook pro 14" to use with my external monitor (Dell S2721QS) via a USB-C to Display port cable. This setup worked fine with my previous laptop, a 2019 Intel MacBook pro, and with the new one initially. However, after a software update (I dont remember which one, as I was travelling and not using the monitor at all at the time), I started to experience issues. Essentially what is happening is that whenever I plug the laptop into the monitor it works, but every few seconds the external display goes black for a few seconds, before continuing to function. It does this every 10-15 seconds, and is very annoying. I have tried using my family members MacBooks with the monitor, and my dads MacBook (M2 16" MacBook pro) has the same issue. However, my old intel mac still works fine. All of the macs I have tested are fully up to date (Sonoma 14.3.1) at the time of writing this.

Update. Chatted with support and apparently the only fix if you want to use HDMI or Thunderbolt to HDMI you need to lower the refresh rate even if the monitor supports the higher rate. I moved mine from 60hz to 50hz and it resolved the issue. However if I ever want to stream 4K/1080P at 60hz I will have to manually change it back.

Apple needs to fix this issue because a monitor that supports 4k/1080P at 60hz should just work...especially since my old Macbook Air (2020 M1) had NO issues and worked fine with the same monitor at 60hx refresh rate.

I noticed the original post mentioned a Disply Port set up, I cannot speak to that option as I only have the HDMI and USB-C to HDMI set up.

A FIX! Updating myself here for anyone else who is experiencing issues:

I ordered a HDMI 2.1 cable and went direct from the monitor to the M3 Mac HDMI Port.

It allowed me to go up to 2k 144hz on my monitor (great). So far, no more flickering!

I was also experiencing audio noise from my interface while this was going on, and apparently the two were related. This Mac apparently does not like 60hz!

So, if anyone else is having issues. Try to get off 60hz refresh rate on whatever display.

Hope this helps.

I have this issue with my M3 Max. The flickering and strobe effect happens on certain websites, and exclusively on my Firefox. I tested the same sites on Safari and is not replicating. Have not tried Chrome as I don't use it. Maybe its only a browser issue (which I first at first) but I have not tested Safari long enough (not my main browser) to see if its happening on other websites. but then I found a fix!!

I tried the suggestion of one user reply here to switch to 50 hertz but that didn't fix it.

I tried different HDMI cables and have the same problem.

I have a HDMI to USB-C cable that I used on my previous MBP and didnt find use for it now since there is a new HDMI port on the M3. Miraculously it works now!!!

So I would assume based on this test it is the HDMI port that is the real issue as the adjacent USB-C port I use now solved the problem. I am a bit ****** off at this, since I have to give up one of the USB-C ports since the HDMI port failed... I don't know where to plug my other external drive, but will do for now, better this than flickering. However I hope Apple has a fix for this, or get a recall on this so we can use the port like intended.

There has always been a major problem for every new model I ever bought from Apple. Please fix this!!!

I have the same issue with my brand new MacBook Pro M3 Pro. The monitor (4k 60hz) I previously used with my MacBook Air M1 (2020) never flickered and from day 1, the new MacBook M3Pro does. I even upgraded all of my cables as well...I did noticed it flickers the most on black screens which is a problem because I usually default to dark mode in most applications.

I just bought a Macbook Pro M3 Pro and I'm also having display issues.

27" 2k 144hz Acer IPS. Works perfectly fine with my two PC's and my old 2020 Macbook.

Very very frustrating. I use my computers docked with external peripherals 90% of the time.

If a new cable does not solve the issue, I will be returning the laptop unfortunately.

Unacceptable with a "Pro" product.
