SMS vs iMessage

I have an iPad that always stays at home so when I get out with my iPhone I never receive any SMS from people that use iMessage unless I turn cellular on.

If I disconnect the iPad from internet people will see that their iMessage can’t be delivered to me and will contact me via SMS.

I missed some time sensitive messages like that because I didn’t think to activate cellular on iPhone or to disconnect the iPad before leaving home.

At home I use the iPad over the iPhone to text people.

This is a really special case so I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple didn’t think about it but did they?

iPhone 12 mini, iOS 17

The answer is to not turn off cellular data on your phone.
