Mac randomly changes display arrangements on its own (Sonoma)

This is the same question that was asked in Mac randomly changes display arrangements… - Apple Community

but for MacOS Sonoma. Apple, in its great wisdom, has rearranged the settings so that the old solution to the problem can no longer be used. The section "Mission Control" no longer exists.

How would one fix this on the Sonoma OS version?

Thanks!

Thanks for the response. I have since swapped the monitors on my docking station and now they no longer get mixed up.

Yes, I'm talking about the Dock. I've try moved it to the left and then it's too far away to interact with, so I'm trying right now. But it's overlapping existing windows now. I'll see if I can get used to this, otherwise it goes back to the bottom.

Thanks for your help!

It is now under "Desktop & Dock":

Wait... since you are talking about monitor cables, I think that I had previously misunderstood the problem.

My previous advice had nothing to do with the relative position of different displays.

How many displays do you have? Are they identical to one another?

I have heard of problems when using two identical displays.

Anyway, the relative position of displays is in System Settings->Displays->Arrange:

Thanks a lot for your help. Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to give it some soak time to see if it sticks.

Unfortunately, the same problem reappeared today. Do it looks like the solutions isn't working for me. I just switched the monitor cables on my dock and that fixed it for today. I'm hoping it will stick with it now and it won't change back.

Below are my settings that had not the intended effect:

I have 2 displays of the same type. I normally arrange them like this:

That sticks for a while. When I reconnect to the dock and resume from sleep, it normally works as expected. But after resuming enough times (usually 2-10 times), the arrangement snaps back to this:

There is yet another problem that I haven't mentioned yet. Independent of the above arrangement, the main screen with the task bar and all active windows appears on one of the monitor at random after wake up from sleep. It's not consistent which one it wakes up on. That sort of switch happens much more frequently than the rearrangement of the monitors.

Beyond that, I have seen the task bar move from one screen to the other by itself right in front of my eyes, at random times. I don't understand what kind of intended feature that could be.

The thing with completely identical displays seems to be a known issue, and I am not aware of a solution. The symptoms you describe have been reported by others, that is why I asked in the first place.

(by comparison, I use two displays too, but not identical, and I never have had my mac lost track of where they are; even across different locations, like home and office, where I have other displays with different dispositions, it always gets them right)

By "Task Bar", do you mean the Dock?

Do you have positioned at the bottom of the screen?

If that is the case, then the behavior you experience, with the Dock "moving" from one screen to the other, is normal. You may want to try putting it on one side, instead of the bottom. FWIW, I don't really use the Dock for anything, so I have it on one side, and hidden. Even if you want it always visible, your screen real estate is far wider than it it tall, so on one side it can be out of your way.
