I want to buy a used Mac mini to run up-to-date apps like Facebook and messenger and music and simple apps like that and I want to be able to pair it to my iPhone 14 as well. What year do I need to find to be able to do all this? i’ve heard that older models have issues.

Personally, I would not buy any MacMini older than 2018 as it is the only one that supports the current version of macOS. But being an Intel based Mac, not sure how much longer it will be supported. It would be preferred to buy a Mac with an Apple M1 processor or newer.

You could probably get away with a 2018 or later used mini, at least for a few years. But if you expect to use "up-to-date" apps you will be better off in the long run by purchasing a new Mac mini.
In addition to what has been suggested. You really need to be wary when purchasing any used Mac. What looks like a good deal from Amazon, E-Bay or a private seller, can easily end up being a bad deal, if it was not properly prepare for resale.
With that said, I recommend only purchasing a refurbished or new Mac mini directly from Apple.
May I add that I have had great success with everything I have ever purchased from OWC including refurbished Macs.
