Using Migration assistant

I have a MacBook pro which is my day-to-day primary computer. I then got a newer MacBook Pro and only put a few files on it. Now I want to make the new MacBook my primary day-to-day computer. Can I use Migration Assistant to move all my files from my original MacBook Pro to my newer MacBook Pro to make it my primary? Can I do that and not lose the few files I already have on the newer unit? Is there a better way? Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest the following:

  • Move the "few files" you've created on your newer MBP to a thumb drive.
  • Reset the new MBP to factory settings: What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support
  • Set up your new MBP just as you did when you first got it. This time, run Migration Assistant as part of the Setup.
    • Migration Assistant can use the following methods of transferring data to a new Mac:
      • Via WiFi (not recommended, as it's way too prone to signal dropouts resulting in corrupted files.
      • Via Time Machine backup external drive. This is the method most use, as it's been around for many years and is rock solid.
      • Via Thunderbolt cable. This depends on the age of your old Mac, and whether it support Thunderbolt 2 or 3. If it supports Thunderbolt 3, then this is your fastest option.
      • Via Ethernet cable. Your new Mac will need USB C<-->Ethernet adaptor. This method is used by quite a few as well.
  • After you've successfully migrated to your new Mac, you can move those "few files" back onto it from the thumb drive.

Hope this helps.
