I have updated from Catalina 10.15.7 to Sonoma 14.3.1 Is this the latest as of March 2, 2024 or should/can I go higher?

Yes...I failed to read the original post carefully. The latest MacOS is 14.3.1.
He definately has A1990. It can run latest OS.
This all depends on which Mac model you have. This information's available by clicking on the Apple menu, then choosing About This Mac.

LOL!! Yes...I anxiously awaited each new issue of those magazines since the Macintosh first arrived on the scene. (Yep...I had the "original" Mac with a whopping 128KB of RAM that required a LOT of disk swapping).
