Bluetooth device not working for AirPlay after update

iPhone SE2020 iOS 17.3.1 ( and two previous updates )

Headphones : Bose Quiet Comfort II

Tried updating phone, rebooting phone, dis- and re-connect headphones, forget and re-pair.

Symptoms :

BT Headphones work fine for phonecalls, facetime etc.

Music shows headphones as sound target ( AirPlay ) - but no sound

DR-Lyd ( Danish Podcast client ) shows headphones as red sound target ( AirPlay ) - but no sound

Obviously any suggestions that I try restarting, update ios, etc are futile

The device is working, it can infact transport sound to and from the iPhone.

Any problem would therefore logically be found in the Airplay or Airplay-to-client-app.

I cannot however find any settings that change anything - hope someone has an idea where to start.

iPhone SE, iOS 14

You're absolutely right, restarting and updating your phone likely wouldn't solve the AirPlay issue since Bluetooth functionality works for calls. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot AirPlay specifically:

  1. Make sure the Bose Connect app, if applicable, is updated to the latest version. Sometimes app updates can fix compatibility issues with AirPlay.
  2. Bose might have released firmware updates for your headphones that improve AirPlay functionality. Visit the Bose website or app to see if there are any updates available.
  3. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Toggle Bluetooth off and wait for a few seconds. Then, toggle it on again. Try connecting your headphones again.
  4. Some apps have their own settings for audio output. Check within the specific apps (such as DR-Lyd) to ensure they are set to use the Bluetooth headphones.
  5. If you have another AirPlay speaker or receiver, try connecting your iPhone to that device. This will help isolate the problem to either your iPhone or your Bose headphones.
  6. Check AirPlay Settings on Your iPhone:
    1. Open the Control Center.
    2. Swipe down to expand the media controls section (where you play/pause music).
    3. Tap on the AirPlay icon (it looks like a triangle with circles coming out of the bottom).
    4. Make sure your Bose headphones are selected as the output device.
    5. See the pic below
    6. Open the Control Center on your iPhone (swipe down from the top-right corner on iPhone SE 2020).
    7. Press and hold the audio card in the top-right corner to expand it.
    8. Check the audio destination to make sure your Bose Quiet Comfort II is selected.
  7. Try playing media from a different app like Apple Music or the Podcasts app to see if the issue persists across all apps.
  8. Reset Network Settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings: Only network settings are removed.
    1. When you reset network settings, previously used networks and VPN settings that weren’t installed by a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM) are removed. Wi-Fi is turned off and then back on, disconnecting you from any network you’re on. The Wi-Fi and Ask to Join Networks settings remain turned on.
    2. To remove VPN settings installed by a configuration profile, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the configuration profile, then tap Remove Profile. This also removes other settings and accounts provided by the profile. See Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone in this guide.
    3. To remove network settings installed by MDM, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the management, then tap Remove Management. This also removes other settings and certificates provided by MDM. See “Mobile device management (MDM)” in the iOS Deployment Reference.
    4. Reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.
  9. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.
