Connect miscrosoft wireless mouse to new MacBook Pro.

I've recently acquired a new MacBook Pro M3. I have a pretty old microsoft wireless mouse (NOT bluetooth, rather the kind with the usb receiver dongle) that I've been using for years with the iMac I've replacing, worked smoothly in that scenario. So now I'm trying to use it with my new MacBook and it's extremely laggy and jerky. Sometimes the cursor just stops until I stop moving the mouse, and they seem to reconnect with each other.

Of course, the MacBook lacking USB-A ports, I've gotten a Thunderbolt 3/USBC <=> USBA adaptor for between the computer and the dongle.

Theories:

A) The adaptor is less than good.

B) There is some base incompatibility between this aged mouse and new computer.

C) There is is setting or driver I need that I haven't stumbled across yet.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!
