Apple Pay hacked on my iPhone?

I normally don’t access my Apple Pay on my phone or anywhere, not even to check the balance. I didn’t think I should have to. Today, I checked it before paying someone and saw that there were 2 successful and 5 unsuccessful attempts charged to my account. The 5 unsuccessful attempts were due to insufficient funds. I checked my bank card account and no record of these charges. Could this be fraud?

Yes, it sure sounds like it. Apple is not a bank and only the issuing bank of the card can approve or deny transactions.

Please look at the back of your card and call the phone number shown. Ask for the fraud department and explain the situation.

Apple cannot approve or decline transactions, only the issuing bank can do that. Apple’s role is to extremely securely transmit the encrypted data necessary to complete the transaction. It sounds you’re card was skimmed or shimmed and the information sold on the Dark Web.

Here’s what Wells Fargo says about the safety and security of Apple Pay.

”The security of your account information is a top priority.

When you pay with Apple Pay and your Wells Fargo card:

  • Your actual card number is replaced with a unique digital card number, which means businesses do not see or store your full card number.

  • All Wells Fargo transactions are monitored by Wells Fargo’s 24/7 risk and fraud detection systems.

  • Purchases made with your Wells Fargo card are protected by Zero Liability protection, so you won't be held responsible for promptly reported unauthorized transactions.”

Apple does not store the decrypted card information. In fact by Wells Fargo pushing the card to Apple Wallet, all Apple or your iPhone ever had was the encrypted data. Only your bank has the key to decrypt the data. So, hacking an iPhone would only yield encrypted data that’s useless. Apple only stores encrypted data on its systems and again, only Wells Fargo has the key.

The number itself was used at western Union and Wells Fargo blocked it and cancelled the card. New card issued by Wells Fargo and added to Apple Pay right through the bank. I only used the new card with Apple Pay a few times and never even received the new card before Wells Fargo called me yesterday and said that someone in Florida was using my Apple Pay to take money out of a Wells Fargo ATM since they don’t need a debit card anymore. I can’t think of any other way my info has been hacked besides Apple Pay.

3 days ago my Wells Fargo card was hacked and was shut down for fraud. Wells Fargo issued me a new card and linked the new card to Apple Pay. I never used the physical card. Today my Apple Pay was used in another state for the new card number. Wells Fargo was able to shut charges down immediately but confirmed the charges were being used by Apple Pay. I only used my Apple Pay linked to the new card a handful of times and different places around my town. Who is at fault here if you say Apple Pay can’t be hacked?
