Mail stuck on "Generating content to print..."

I get this message in a popup whenever I try to print from Mail, whether it's the viewer window or the message window. There is a little progress bar but it never moves and the window just stays there so I have to cancel out of it. I've been have this intermittently over the last few months but now it's persistent. Rebooting doesn't seem to help. I have an HP Officejet 8600 that I've used for years. It prints with no issues from every other application so the printer is not the problem. I've searched here in the community forum but only see some messages that are about older OS versions. I'm on Sonoma 14.2.1 on a iMac with the M1 chip. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your response. Most of the time, the message window with "Generating content to print..." hangs, but if I let it hang for several minutes, sometimes the print dialog box actually does comes up. Then I can print, and also create a PDF that prints (when opened in Preview). The problem is that the process stalls at that message. And I did notice once yesterday, that after several minutes the print dialog box came up but the preview of the message I was trying to print was empty.

I wonder if there may be some issue with retrieving some of the email content.

Sure sounds like there is an issue.
