Pay for watch in Apple Store with Apple ID funds

I have several Apple gift cards. If I wish to use them to buy an Apple Watch should I redeem them to my Apple ID first.

Why can’t I use my Apple ID balance to buy an Apple Watch? I purchased two gift cards and was instructed to add them to my apple wallet. I now have a $400 Apple ID balance that says I can use to purchase products, but upon checkout it will not let me.

Only if you'll be buying it online. Once redeemed online, the cards can't be used in a physical store.
