Why does my Imac has 2 HD and 2 Hd Data and how to remove them?

So after updating to BigSur my computer crashed. After following support advice, I reinstalled Catalina and it works ok now, my hd was just wiped clean in the process. Never-mind that, but now I have 2 HDs and 2 HDs Data. I tried to erase the HD data2, it's empty now but it still shows in disk utility. How could I remove HD2 and HD Data2 ? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

If it did come with a Fusion Drive, then somehow it got "split." A Fusion Drive consists of a small SSD, and a much larger HDD that work together to provide your Mac with the best performance. It would also been "seen" in the Finder as a single drive.

I think you should first consider rebuilding that Fusion Drive first before deleting anything. The following support article describes the steps to do so: How to fix a split Fusion Drive - Apple Support

To help me get a better picture of your drives, please post the result of the folowing command in the Terminal app:

  • diskutil list internal

Did this iMac originally come equipped with a Fusion drive?

The primary reason you are seeing this is that, when macOS was re-installed, it was done incorrectly. Most likely, it was installed into an APFS volume and not into a container. This happens when you don't choose "Show All Devices" for the Disk Utility's view setting.

At this point, you have two choices:

  1. Start over. Completely erase the system drive, and then, re-install macOS.
  2. Try removing the incorrect volumes. Those would be Mac HD2 & Mac HD - Data2.

Which do you prefer?

Thanks for your reply. It did come with fusion drive. I'd rather try to remove the incorrect volumes but I'm not sure how.

Also I'm probably gonna get a more recent Imac (mid2020) very soon and I would like to back up my actual system properly so I don't to reinstall all my apps and softwares. So what would be the best solution in your opinion?
