After several years my MacBook Air A1466 battery gave out. I'm trying to decide whether to buy one on the net and change it myself, or take it in to an Apple dealer and let them change it for me. Obviously there is a big price difference. Any thoughts on this issue?

to shop for a 3rd party battery, I would recommend shopping at OWC. their main focus is Mac compatible hardware. they are your best bet for a battery. there are also self install videos on their site so you can determine for your self wether or not you could pull off the replacement.
with that being said, if the MBA is new enough, you may want to take it to an Apple Store or an AASP and have them perform the replacement. and if that is the case, you would also get an OEM apple battery.

If Apple will still service that Mac, don't even think about getting an aftermarket battery.
OWC is a fine choice, but only if you have no other alternative.

They don’t have the battery in stock.
