I'm working and suddenly the desktop, with top tool bar, enlarges past the window's dimensions. I can't get to the apple logo on left side or my files on the far right. How to make it go back or not to do that in the first place. When I reboot, the new screen is back to normal dimensions inside the window.

That is a zoom.
As indicated, it can be activated by doing a scroll up gesture while holding down the Control key.
To revert it, just hold down Control and do the scroll down gesture.
Just try it.
And when you get it fixed, see PRP_53 post and, if you so desire, disable this feature.
For my old eyes, it is often very helpful, but maybe not for you, especially not accidentally.

you might have just zoomed in. to zoom in, you can double tap with three fingers or tap then slide up, both with three fingers. to zoom out, also double tap with three fingers, or tap and slide down, both with three fingers.

Check in your setting >> System Setting >> Accessibilities >> Zoom
See is one or more setting are enabled including Keyboard Commands that can be used to Zoom In
Yes it is a zoom. Just check this System setting pane to see if the (top arrow) is turned on and if (bottom arrow) there's a modifier key selected.
If it's turned on hold down the modifier key and drag your finger down the mouse or up dampening how you have scroll setup.
Thank you all for your suggestions. It's not a zoom - the entire desktop enlarges by 20 or 25% and so its menu across the head is up beyond the dimensions of my screen. it sort of giggles when it does this. i can force it to move left so I can see the apple at the menu on top but it's hard to get to so I can Restart.
My question is: why does this happen and how to make it stop? It's not a zoom as a rescale the entire desktop.
Thanks but it's not a zoom like we think of a zoom. It's a rescaling of the entire desktop so the menu across the top is now tucked up beyond the top of my screen (a 17"). It's not the zoom feature and this is a desktop. This only does this on my desktop iMacs, not on my laptop or ipads where finger functions work.
