How to remove activation lock on iPad without Apple ID and password?

I need k advice and guidance on a challenge I've recently encountered with an iPad. I have an iPad that's currently locked with an activation lock, and unfortunately, I do not have access to the original Apple ID and password that was used to set it up. This situation arose because the iPad was handed down to me by a family member who has since passed away, and we did not realize the importance of having this information beforehand.

I understand the activation lock is a crucial security feature designed by Apple to prevent unauthorized use of the device, and I fully respect the intentions behind it. However, I'm now looking for a legitimate way to remove the activation lock under these circumstances so I can make use of the iPad.

I appreciate any guidance, advice, or experiences you can share. I aim to resolve this issue while respecting all legal and ethical considerations surrounding the use of Apple devices.

Thank you very much for your time and help.

To remove activation lock on iPad without Apple ID and password, there are the steps you can follow:

1. Go to Apple's support page and select "iPad."

2. Choose "Unlock Activation Lock" from the available options.

3. Provide Apple with your iPad’s serial number or IMEI number.

4. Explain your situation and provide any required documents, such as a death certificate or proof of purchase.

5. Wait for Apple's verification process to complete, which may take several days.

6. If approved, Apple will remove the activation lock remotely, and you'll receive an email confirmation.

Keep in mind that Apple may have conditions and limitations regarding the removal of activation lock. Also, if you purchased the iPad from a third party seller, make sure it is not stolen or blacklisted before requesting Apple's assistance.

Activation Lock serves as a protective measure within Apple's Find My Device feature, automatically enabling itself when Find My Device is activated. This lock plays a critical role in safeguarding the information and data on your device. When an iPhone or iPad is bound to the owner through this lock, the legitimate method to bypass this security feature is by entering the password associated with the corresponding iCloud account. Without this password, access to the device remains restricted.

Re: “got sold a iPad and the owner locked it and I don’t know the email or the password”

If you can find the seller, and think it is safe to contact them, ask them to either take the iPad back temporarily to prepare it properly for a new owner; or to give your money back.

Activation Lock is an anti-theft deterrent. Under the circumstances you describe, you cannot remove the Activation Lock, we cannot, and Apple will not. Without help from the owner, the iPad will remain an Activation-Locked brick.

If this iPad is brought from someone else and is still connected to the previous owner's iCloud account , it's possible to disconnect it by reaching out to the seller and guiding them through the removal process. This option is viable only with cooperation from the previous owner, enabling the deactivation of the Activation Lock on the iPad without necessitating the original Apple ID and password.

Here's how to remove activation lock on iPad without Apple ID and password:

  1. Navigate to icloud.com using a web browser on your computer.
  2. Log in using your Apple ID credentials.
  3. Select "Find My iPad," followed by "All Devices."
  4. Choose your iPad from the displayed list of devices, click on "Erase iPad," and then finalize by selecting "Remove from Account."

If the methods mentioned do not resolve the issue with the iPad Activation Lock without the Apple ID, your final recourse is to seek assistance from Apple Support. To do this, arrange an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar through their official site. Be prepared to present documentation proving ownership of the device or evidence that the initial purchase was made by the original owner. This could include requesting the original purchase receipt to be forwarded to you via email.

There is absolutely nothing you can do without access to your Apple ID or the original purchase receipt from Apple or Authorized Apple seller to remove the Activation Lock. The information has been provided here for both of those options, so I can only assume those are not possible, and your device will be unusable.

Not sure what changes you are referring to. Apple does recommend passwords to be at least 8 characters with uppercase, lower case, and special character like many companies, but that is only when creating a new password and does not affect older passwords. My current password does not have those requirements and still works fine when signing into any service and on my device. It is true that the original purchase receipt is required to remove an Activation Lock and yes those should be saved for any Apple device.

Remotely erasing and removing a device from your AppleID account, via iCloud, will not remove the Activation Lock from device.

Are you referring to an iPod music player? Most of those were discontinued long ago, did not run iOS, and did not support Activation Lock. I'm not sure how you would reset one of those if you set a passcode, and forgot it.

There were iPod touches that ran iOS.

I have devices that are 10 years old. The devices are still working but due to Apple ID requirement for new devices, my Apple IDs are not able to use to login to those devices. Now I have a problem. The old devices have activation lock. Knowing all my Apple IDs and Passwords, I simply cannot unlock them. They stuck in the activation page and refuse to take my Apple ID and password. I have been through all the online forums and help, even tried the activation help. The thing is that the activation help page requires original receipts of purchase. I have to say that I doubt the majority people would save their receipt, especially for longer than 3 years. Those devices are more than 10 years. Good for Apple to create durable devices that still work after 10 years. Bad for Apple to create a system that dumps unnecessary toxic waste to our mother earth (while the devices still working). I am not saying just one or two products. I have accumulated more than 50 apple products in the past 20 or so years. Some broke, some still work but due to Apple ID restrictions and Apple Store restrictions, there is no more software support. The activation lock not able to be unlocked with original Apple ID is another one added to the problem list.
