How to fix startup issues on Silver tower Mac Pro, grey screen with white lines

Prior to this screen, there is a screen with many coloured pixels. My question is - get rid or is it a graphics card issue that could be resolved?

Thanks,

Mark

The initial "chime" sound is generated in software when your Mac passes the Power-On Self Test. If the chime occurs and/or startup continues, your Mac is working. The screen should light up and draw a blank gray screen. Then on to the Disk Drive.

Accessing the Boot drive:

The solid Apple is not in the Mac's ROM at Cold start. The Apple logo can only appear when it is fetched in the first "blob" of software loaded from a 'magic' place on the boot drive, or re-run after a Restart. Then a whole lot of stuff is initialized, and the progress Bar moves part way across. After a cold start, seeing the solid Apple appear says your drive was able to produce the software that contains the Apple logo.

based on that, your Mac is generally working, but has a graphics card issue.

do you know what model-year, or what MacOS it was running when it was working?

there is a specifications sticker. you have to put your head above the unit and look 'down its back'. On a shelf just below the display card cable, you will see a sticker, facing straight UP, with an abbreviated version of what Mac that actually is, and what configuration when it left the factory. (don't post the serial number, it attracts vermin.)

iIf you meant A1186 and EMC 2180, that looks up to a 2008 model.

2008 model is capable of running up to 10.11 El Capitan, which includes Safari 9 for modern encryption that can still be used on the web.

DON'T replace that very dated 2600 graphics card like-for-like. Best all round replacement card is a used Apple-firmware ATI/AMD 5770 card, Drivers were first included in 10.16.5. be certain to get an Apple-firmware card. Cards for a PC were available, but will not show Any "boot-up screens" so the display stays dark until you log in.
