Change IPad Lock Screen Password

I went to change my son’s ipad Lock

Screen password.


But somehow he can request to use the old password to login!


And change the password back to the old password.


How does he do that? And how can I change his password without him changing it back to his old password?

Presumably the iPad is running iPadOS 17.x.


If you change the device passcode in iOS/iPadOS 17 and later, you may be able to recover access using the previous known Passcode. After changing the device Passcode, the new Passcode Reset feature provides 72 hours to use your old Passcode to access your device:

Temporarily use your old passcode when you forget your new passcode on iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
